It is estimated that around half of all men and a quarter of all women will experience some problem with baldness at some stage in their life. Whilst for men baldness can sometimes be fashionable it is certainly not fashionable for women, and it’s probably true to say that men who suffer from it generally do not consider it fashionable. So there are millions of people who are looking for the best product for thinning hair. Lets consider the options you have when searching for products for thinning hair.
But first I would like to talk about causes balding in men and women. It is estimated that up to 95 percent of all men and a similar percentage of women all suffer from pattern baldness. You inherit pattern balding from members of your family and the effect it is that you are predisposed genetically to experience some form of balding in your life. There is men’s pattern baldness and women’s pattern baldness and the results for different individuals vary wildly but the method by which it operates is the same for all. There is a hormone called DHT which causes individual hairs to thin, weaken and die by slowly restricting their capacity to absorb nutrients.
The market for thinning hair treatments is enormous and like all these things where there is a market there will be a product, or lots of products. If you get on the internet and search for a product for thinning hair you’ll find any number of lotions and potions and ointments and creams and shampoos and conditioners and vitamins and minerals all designed to be a thinning hair treatment. Unfortunately many of these will do nothing for you other than to empty your wallet.
But in fact there are only 2 products approved by the FDA for use as balding treatments. The first is finasteride, marketed as Propecia, which is a prescription only balding treatment. Minoxidil is the second and is found under a range of different names. Both finasteride and minoxidil are approved for use in men as a baldness treatment but it is only minoxidil that has been approved for women as the use of finasteride by women can have some serious side-effects.
Both these products were originally intended to treat other conditions, finasteride to treat prostate related conditions and minoxidil to treat high blood pressure. In both cases trial subjects observed an increase in hair growth and so further studies were undertaken on the effects of these treatments as a balding treatment. And good results were achieved for both.
There’s many options available if you’re looking to the best thinning hair product. But other than the 2 mentioned above no other products are FDA approved as a balding treatment. You’re welcome to try them but you do so at your own risk.
And it’s equally true that even the 2 products mentioned above don’t work for everybody. And it is also very important to understand that even if you use one of the 2 products approved for use it may take quite some time before you can see any regrowth of hair and you should commit to a minimum of 6 months, and preferably 12 months, before you are prepared to make a judgement on whether they are working for you. But both these thinning hair treatments work.
The bottom line is that hair loss is caused by the operation of DHT limiting the ability of the follicle to take up nutrients. Minoxidil, it is thought, works to promote hair regrowth because it increases the supply of blood to the hair follicle thereby increasing the supply of available nutrients. And one company has decided that it is a better approach to supply minoxidil together with a whole range of natural hair nutrients so that the nutrients are available to the follicle when it can take them up.
It would seem that this approach is more effective than simply using minoxidil on its own. It seems to make complete sense that if lack of nutrients causes hair thinning then supplying more nutrients and increasing the ability of the follicle to absorb those nutrients must ultimately be the best approach.
