Hair Loss in Women: A Devastating Experience

Author: Fernanda B.Sc, Pharm, M.H

Recently I went through this emotionally traumatizing experience where I became aware I was beginning to lose my hair. To some this might sound and vain, however, any women who has gone through major hair loss empathises with the grieving.

I’ve always had deep dark brown colored thick curly hair with a vast amount of body – too much body.  Hairdressers always raved about my hair. Secretly I pined for the hair I did not have which is silky long blond hair. However, when I looked about and saw chunks of my hair on the floor, instead of being rooted to my head, I absolutely appreciated what I was losing.  At the time, anywhere I went, I left a trail of hair in my path. When I shampooed my hair clumps of hair would drop out. When I brushed my hair, after a minimal amount of strokes, the brush would literally become invisible in all the hair on it. I felt so vulnerable that I cried all the time. When I put my hair up into an elastic and its thickness was no longer what it used to be I finally realized I had to act hastily.

My first plan was to make an appointment to see my Doctor, There are a lot of medical diseases that cause hair loss such as Cushings, hypothyroidism, diabetes and polycystic ovaries, etc. I agreed to a number of tests and they all came out negative.  Although I was relieved to know I was in great health, it did nothing to calm my fright about the hair loss.  Now I was convinced I had inherited the curse of baldness that runs all through my Dad’s family.  This flung me into a deeper depression.

My next move was to peruse the internet looking for information.  The internet was filled with all sorts of miracle stories for hair loss and baldness. I was concerned at how compelled I was to try something, anything, that would stop this hair loss. Particularly interesting were all of those hair transplant places offering a solid head of hair. But not one of these ads discussed an explanation.  Why was my hair falling out so dramatically?

I did find a rational solution. Via the internet I saw a medical clinic with a dermatologist who specializes in hair conditions. I contacted the clinic and was told I had to have a referral from my physician with test results to deny other medical problems. Once I called my doctor and the outcome of the tests were sent over we booked an appointment. I saw the specialist and he did a in-depth check of my scalp and my medical history. After talking to me for a good length of time he knew the reason for my hair loss. I don’t recall his name but he will forever be “GOLDENDOC”

Previously that year I had suffered with pneumonia which was very stressful to my body.  Mother Nature being what she is, made a decision my body required all the nourishment possible and nourishing my hair was not on her agenda.  “GOLDENDOC” in his welcomed wisdom told me that the loss of my lovely locks of hair would be temporary. True to his word my hair finished falling out after another five or six weeks.

Then I stepped through the reverse experience. No hair loss at all, not even the usual fallout of 100-200 hairs on a daily basis.  This lasted for six months or so.  Now I am happy to have all my hair back, and I sure highly regard it.

If any female is experiencing hair loss, please consider what I did. See your physician and get the needed tests done to eliminate underlying medical maladies.  If these turn out negative, make an appointment with a dermatologist who specializes in for work with hair loss.  He/she will give information and options that allow you to make a more sensible choice.  Watch for my next blog Hair loss in women; Sensible Information.
